The Department of Justice is threatening to sue to the Lubbock Police Department over their hiring process. According to KFYO News, the DOJ accuses the LPD of discrimination against Hispanics and women.

The US DOJ cited that per the hiring requirements, 81 percent of white males passed both the written and physical examinations, while only 68 percent of Hispanics and 37 percent of females received passing scores.

Officially, Lubbock Police is in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the LPD has until August 3, 2015 to reach compliance with the Justice Department before a lawsuit could be filed.

A brief aside: the United States Justice Department did say an employer is “not prohibited from using selection procedures that cause adverse impact if it can demonstrate that the procedures validly predict an applicant’s ability to perform on the job.”

Should the Lubbock Police Department change their hiring process?
