On Friday, Texas State Senator Charles Perry was appointed to the 2021 Texas Senate Redistricting Committee by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick.

The Texas Legislature will take on redistricting in 2021 and the issue is always a controversial one. In a press release on Friday, Perry said West Texas will be represented.

"Having the largest rural district in Texas, I am honored to be selected to serve on the Senate's redistricting committee. The appointment shows a commitment to ensure West Texas maintains a strong voice as district lines are redrawn."

The redistricting process usually happens every 10 years after the results of the census are completed. The redrawing of boundaries for state and federal districts must happen to ensure the fulfillment of the constitutional mandate of equal representation. Lt. Gov. Patrick named Sen. Joan Huffman as Chair of the committee and Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa as the Vice-Chair.

"I want to thank Lt. Gov. Patrick for this appointment, and I look forward to working with Chairwoman Joan Huffman and my fellow Senate colleagues to complete this difficult but important task," said Sen. Charles Perry.
