Police Chief Floyd Mitchell On Lubbock’s Police-Citizen Relationship [Interview]
Thursday on The Chad Hasty Show, Lubbock's Chief of Police Floyd Mitchell joined the show to share his view on Lubbock's law enforcement situation, and how Lubbock compares to other cities during this time of high tensions and upheaval.
Floyd, Chief of Lubbock's Police Department sine November 2019, is a veteran of the Temple, Texas and Kansas City, Missouri police departments, as well as the United States Air Force.
Chief Floyd and Hasty discussed the Lubbock Police Department's overall relationship with citizens, as compared to other cities in the nation that are experiencing turmoil, as well as reforms and changes that need to be made.
During the wide-ranging interview, Hasty asked Mitchell if he worries about police officers being forced to second-guess themselves while simply trying to do their job, then getting themselves into bad situations. This comes amid reports of police officers across the country walking off the job or retiring rather than risking ruining their own lives and careers.
Mitchell replied:
I do...When you look at the Lubbock Police Department, we have over sixty four police officers that could leave right now. They could walk out the door [and retire]...And you hear those conversations in the halls about, 'If I am trying my best to do what is right and what is proper, based on the laws that are on the books, and I make a mistake, I could lose everything.'
