When I was a little kid, I dreamed about throwing a touchdown pass to win the Super Bowl. That dream quickly dried up for me by about third grade when I realized I'd have to reset my goals and adjust my future plans. I went from wanting to be just like Troy Aikman to wanting to be like Larry Allen. That was in the early '90s though, and kids today have a new hero.

The newly-minted Face of the NFL, Patrick Mahomes, has been front and center competitively since he burst onto the scene in 2018. He's got an MVP for a regular season and a Super Bowl championship under his belt, the Kansas City Chiefs have been to three straight AFC championships, and he's thrown touchdowns in back-to-back Super Bowls. He's living out that childhood dream of his on the biggest stage imaginable.

Kids today want to be Mahomes like kids in my generation wanted to be Steve Young and Troy Aikman. They dress like him for Halloween. They emulate his style on the field at recess, throwing as deep as they can. Now, they can actually get inside Mahomes' helmet in the brand new virtual reality spectacular called, MVP Football: The Patrick Mahomes Experience.

It's the best parts of Road to Glory or Franchise mode from some traditional video game systems put into the Oculus Quest and Quest 2. You get to start in high school and play through college to get to the NFL and become a superstar just like Mahomes.

Oculus.com describes the game like this: "Call the plays, throw super charged passes, and stiff arm oncoming defenders in slow motion in this high adrenaline VR football game."

The game was developed by CityLights in partnership with Free Range Games and is by all accounts the first of its kind.

"I couldn’t be prouder of the team. What they have achieved has truly broken the mold of what defines a realistic sports game. Being able to design for an immersive experience allowed us to explore what it truly means to be an MVP quarterback… calling the audible, finding the open receiver, stiff-arming a rusher,” said Free Range Games CEO Chris Scholz via press release.

The CityLights company first partnered with Mahomes back in 2019 before the Chiefs won the Super Bowl and have developed this game with his incredible resume in mind.

“What Patrick has already achieved in his career—and I know this is only the beginning—is amazing and to give audiences a taste of an MVP Experience is incredible,” said CityLights Co-Founder David Ganek.

Quarterbacks have been using VR for several years to get reps without the physical wear and tear on the body, and now the common man can get the same experience.

Full disclosure: I don't own an Oculus, but I'm already doing a little early Christmas shopping for myself so I can finally throw a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

More game features via Oculus:

  • Realistic motion controls for throwing the ball to wide receivers, shovel passing to your running back, stiff-arming oncoming defenders, calling time-outs, and more.
  • The intense, arcade-style action will have you throwing combustible footballs, electrifying your receivers, and dodging in slow motion.
  • Choose from practice, high school, college, and pro modes.
  • Review the playbook, craft custom plays, and call the audibles between plays.
  • Global leaderboards so you can compete with your friends.
  • Play however best suits you, whether you are standing or sitting.
