Measles Outbreak In West Texas Continues To Grow
The outbreak of measles in West Texas continues to grow in number and UMC is sending a medical bus to help deal with testing as numbers rise.
According to the latest numbers being reported out of Gaines County, there are at least 15 confirmed cases of measles. Most cases are connected to children, but the South Plains Public Health District has reported that there are now a few adult cases that have been confirmed. The South Plains Health District also reported that all cases are connected to unvaccinated individuals.
It was announced on Monday that UMC in Lubbock is sending the UMC AMBUS to Gaines County to help with testing for measles. The bus is located at the Seminole Hospital District.
Those in Gaines County can stop by the UMC AMBUS and either walk up or drive up and they will get swabbed for testing. The samples will be sent to Austin for testing. Measles is highly contagious and those who are not vaccinated are at an increased risk of contracting the virus.
