Another Health Alert Issued For Lubbock

The City of Lubbock has issued a health alert as another case of rabies has been confirmed in Lubbock County. A skunk found in the west Lubbock tested positive for rabies. The confirmation marks the second such case of rabies confirmed in the county.

Rabies can be transmitted to humans via an infected animals saliva, the good news is that illness can be prevented before symptoms begin. Sadly, once a person shows symptoms, the dieses is almost always fatal.

So if you do come into contact with an animal that you think has rabies, getting help as soon as possible is the way to go.

According to  press release from the City of Lubbock, here are precautions Lubbock Citizens can take.

Residents are advised to take the following precautions:

• Keep rabies vaccinations up to date for all pets.
• Keep your pets under direct supervision so they do not come in contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance for the animal immediately.  Report the bite to Lubbock Animal Services so the animal may be placed in observation or submitted for rabies testing.
• Do not handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.
• Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.

The City of Lubbock will announce any other future cases of rabies. Make sure your pets are vaccinated.
