CBP Officers Seize $23 Million in Meth Hidden in Papaya Shipment
Do I even need to say that there has been another major bust along the Texas border? At this point it's just another day down there; it's nothing special. Well, border agents recently ran into a massive meth bust that surprised even them!
Pharr International Bridge Port Director Carlos Rodriguez noted the fast response from his team in stopping these drugs from entering America:
This massive methamphetamine seizure reflects the dangerous reality of the drug threat our officers face every day and the effective utilization of the experience and technology to zero-in and take down these loads.
Over $23M in Meth Along Texas Border
On July 6, officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) noticed a semi-truck attempting to gain entry from Mexico into the country at the Pharr International Bridge Port of Entry.
The truck was transporting a large shipment of papaya which seemed the perfectly natural cover-up for the nefarious truth of the situation. In actuality, the papayas were red herrings for what the driver was actually transporting: 2,571.69 pounds of methamphetamine.
How Much Was the Meth Shipment Worth?
That's right, after secondary inspection which included assistance from a canine team, border officers discovered the 384 packages of the alleged illegal narcotic totaling an estimated street value of $23,647,288.

Non-intrusive inspection equipment was also used during this seizure. These are essentially large-scale systems that scan cargo for contraband or other illegal goods without impeding the flow of legitimate traffic or passengers.
A criminal investigation was opened on the driver, and the semi-truck was seized by CBP for further inspection.
