A Lubbock man will spend multiple years behind bars for robbing a local bank in 2019, all because he couldn't afford to buy a car.

50-year-old Eric Dion Warren desperately wanted to buy a BMW loaned to him by a local dealership, but he didn’t have the money. Most people would save up until they had enough, but Warren didn't want to wait.

So he went to an AIM Bank location in Wolfforth and decided to commit a robbery by stealing the money he needed and threatening a bank teller with what appeared to be a handgun.

The Lubbock Police Department says Warren slipped a note to the teller that demanded $10,000 in 50 and 100 dollar bills and threatened to shoot the teller if they refused or caused a scene.

After he had received and concealed an unknown amount of cash inside a fast-food bag, Warren left the scene the same way he came; in his borrowed BMW.

Not even 20 minutes after the robbery, police say Warren returned to the dealership to try and purchase the BMW with a down payment of $3000. Unbeknownst to Warren, during the transaction the dealership had been alerted to the fact that the BMW had just been used in the robbery of AIM Bank.

An employee of the dealership then called police and Warren was arrested at the dealership without incident. Police say they did find a weapon inside the vehicle, but it was only a pellet gun that has been painted to look real.

Warren was sentenced on Thursday, March 11, to 20 years in prison.
