Lubbock Man Arrested on 13 Charges After Firing at Off-Duty Cop
If you've ever wondered if it's a good idea to shoot your gun at a police officer, let this man in Lubbock serve as an example. After choosing to fire at a cop, he was eventually arrested and slapped with a total of 13 charges and a massive seven-figure bond.
LPD Responds to Shots Fired
According to the Lubbock Police Department (LPD) news release, officers responding to a call of shots fired at the 6900 block of Genoa Avenue on November 13 were met with quite the story.
It turns out that, at around 3:23 in the afternoon, 51-year-old Sylas Smart was arguing with a woman at the Genoa residence. As the argument escalated, Smart went to a nearby off-duty cop's house and began to repeatedly ring the doorbell.
The off-duty cop, out of the house with his family, saw Smart at his house through the doorbell camera and decided to head home to see what was causing the commotion.
As the cop was pulling into his driveway with his family in the car, Smart, hidden behind a tree on the property, began opening fire on the car. To protect his family, the cop sped away and drove through a fence to keep them out of harms way.
A Not-So-Smart Getaway
Smart immediately fled the scene, possibly climbing onto the roof of another house before running through backyards and alleyways before being caught by the pursuing law enforcement.
After firing once at the cops during the chase, he eventually dropped his firearm when they took him into custody without incident.
Sylas Smart's List of Charges
Sylas Smart was then arrested on three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of burglary of habitation, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, one count of unlawfully carrying a weapon, and one count of evading arrest or detention.
Smart's bond was set at $1 million as a result of his actions. This investigation is still ongoing as of November 14.
