Lubbock Jury Finds San Angelo Police Chief Guilty of Bribery
Tim Vasquez, the former Police Chief of San Angelo, has been found guilty by a Lubbock Jury of bribery and mail fraud.
KAMC News reports that Vasquez allegedly accepted over $130,000 over a 10-year period from Dailey & Wells Communications, Inc., a radio system vendor. Apparently, the company paid Vasquez's band "Funky Munky" $84,000 to play 10 shows at the company's headquarters in San Antonio, on top of other deals.
It's said this was all in exchange for him recommending the vendor for 2 contracts with the City of San Angelo worth over $11 million.
Vasquez was found guilty of one charge of a bribe by an agent of an organization receiving federal funds and three counts of honest services mail fraud. The jury began deliberations Wednesday, March 23rd and came back with their verdict the day after.
US Attorney Chad Meacham said:
Law enforcement officers, particularly those in leadership positions, should be bastions of integrity. By accepting bribes, Mr. Vasquez defiled his badge. The Justice Department is determined to root out public corruption wherever we find it. Our citizens deserve honest public servants.
Vasquez now faces a total of 70 years in prison.
