Tuesday on Sunrise LBK with Dave King and Tom Collins, The Superintendent of the Lubbock Independent School District Dr. Kathy Rollo joined Dave and Tom to talk about the new school year and how it's going, the various projects that are being worked on using the 2018 bond money, breakfast for students, and more.

The new school year for Lubbock ISD is now two and a half weeks into its first semester, and Dr. Rollo was asked how it is going. She answered that, while it is not without its expected bumps, it is progressing really well so far. When asked if there is any catchup that needs to be done for students who may have fallen behind, she explained that, last year, they were able to open up face to face learning for any child who wanted it, but despite this, there is still a bit of catchup to be done. Still talking about the previous school year, she explained that, due to the virus, last year was an exception to their usual rule of the school being funded based on average daily attendance. However, they are back on that funding system this year, and therefore would like kids to attend if they can. She does remind parents, however, that if their kid shows any sign of sickness, that it is better to stay home.

Dr. Rollo was also asked to speak on any progress after the 2018 bond election. She explained that it is underway, and that they are working on many projects. Such projects include making secure entrances at all the schools that need it, enhancements to safety and security, the new elementary school which has now been completed and she says looks beautiful, a new fine arts division for Talkington, and a new partnership with Texas Tech to build a new AgriSTEM facility on the Tech campus. The facility will be located on 4th and Quaker, and Rollo says that it will, "open up access to AgriSTEM career pathways for all of the students across Lubbock ISD."

Going back to talking about the virus, Dr. Rollo was asked about COVID-19 protocols. Rollo explained that they have all of their COVID safety protocols posted on their website at lubbockisd.org/covid19, where you can find info on how to prevent COVID, optional mask info, all their data about positive and recovered cases, and more.
