Lubbock City Council Approves Addition of Marked Bike Lanes on Broadway
The Lubbock City Council Thursday evening held their last regularly scheduled meeting for the month of April.
The council unanimously approved a major change to the traffic configuration on an approximate 3 and-a-half mile stretch of Broadway.
Broadway, from University Avenue going east to Redbud Avenue, will be reduced from four lanes of traffic (plus curbside parking), to a total of three lanes of traffic—one main lane going east and west, plus a center turn lane. Then on each side of Broadway, marked bike lanes will be added to the right of each main lane.
District 4 City Councilman Steve Massengale spoke in favor of the downtown traffic project. "That part of town, and I'm not sure if people realize this or not, has the greatest pedestrian traffic and the concentration is high down there, of any other area in the city," Councilman Massengale said. He continued, "Most people, and they're students, walk. They don't drive down there. And so, for that reason I think bike lanes are important as downtown evolves."
The cost of the project is $153,353 dollars and most of the work will be performed by Barricades Unlimited, with City of Lubbock Traffic Operations completing the remainder.
In other council news, a change was approved in Lubbock Aero’s lease agreement at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport. Lubbock Aero will not be leasing additional land on airport property to build a new hangar. Lubbock Aero will continue to operate out of its existing facilities at the airport.
Finally, the city council approved a $160,000 lawsuit settlement with a man who was injured in a motor vehicle accident last September with a Solid Waste Services vehicle.
