Mark McBrayer Elected Mayor of Lubbock
We already knew that Lubbock would have a new Mayor, the question going into the weekend was, would it be Steve Massengale or Mark McBrayer that would prevail in the runoff election on June 15th?
And the voters overwhelmingly answered that question.
Mark McBrayer took 72.16% of the vote to Steve Massengale's 27.84% when the votes were counted Saturday night. 16,441 citizens of Lubbock voted in the runoff election and 11,864 voters cast their ballots for McBrayer. 4,577 voters cast a ballot for Massengale in the runoff.
Back on May 4th, McBrayer had a total of 11,537 cast ballots for him. Massengale had 8,720 voters cast ballots for him.
Saturday's results bring an end to Steve Massengale's time on the Lubbock City Council. Massengale served 8 years on the City Council and previously served on the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees. In 2014, Massengale challenged then State Representative Charles Perry in the Republican Primary and lost.
Once sworn-in, McBrayer will lead a council that has been completely remade in recent years 4 out of the 6 council members are brand new. And both Councilwomen Wilson and Martinez-Garcia were elected in 2022. Gordon Harris, who will represent District 2 won the runoff for that race on Saturday.
