License Plate Cameras Coming To Lubbock

If it always feels like someone is watching you, that feeling is about to increase. Lubbock County Commissioners on Monday approved license plate readers to be installed around Lubbock County.
The cameras will take pictures of every license plate that passes through an intersection where a camera is installed. According to KAMC, those images will be deleted after 30 days. The license plate readers will be used for a a number of reasons, but not to catch drivers with expired tags according to Lubbock County Commissioners.
KAMC reports that the cameras can be used to catch vehicles that are reported stolen or are part of Silver or Amber alerts. Anti-gang units will also be able to use the pictures for their investigations. According to KAMC, County Judge Curtis Parrish says the cameras are not intrusive.
“This is not an intrusive measure,” Parrish said. “It does not violate the Fourth Amendment of unreasonable search and seizures you’re already subjected to when you drive around to cameras watching as you go.”
KAMC reported that Amarillo and Midland also use the cameras in their cities. Commissioners voted 4-1 for the cameras to be installed with only County Commissioner Jason Corley voting against the measure.
