The reason for that is simple, have you counted the number of federal facilities in Texas lately? It's a lot!

There are 18 federal prisons and NINE federal prison camps that are operating in the Lone Star state.

Yes, really.

I came across this interesting deep dive into federal facilities made available by Zoukis Consulting. Not only do they list the facilities, they provide a fantastic look into the nitty gritty details about each facility.

There's Only One Maximum Security Federal Prison in Texas

Just one. And that would be USP Beaumont in Beaumont, Texas down in Jefferson County. What I found more interesting, though, was how absolutely massive FCC Beaumont is.

There's four (I think....) facilities that join together as one giant heavily-guarded complex.

If you zoom over to Google maps and really look at these places from above in the satellite view--they almost look like a contained industrial city. Literally.

There's One Federal Prison in Downtown Houston

Yes, really. It's essentially a prison..in a skyscraper....But it's a special kind of federal facility. If you take a gander at the list of facilities below, you'll see what I mean.
