Sunshine Stanek will take over of the position of Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney two month early. Friday morning, Governor Greg Abbott announced he appointed Stanek to fill the vacant position of Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney after the resignation of Matt Powell.

Stanek ran unopposed for the D.A.'s office in this past Tuesday's election. Stanek will officially serve out the unexpired term through the end of the year, before beginning a four-year term on January 1, 2019.

According to the governor's office, Stanek is the first woman to serve as the Lubbock County Criminal District Attorney. She has served for over 18 years in the Lubbock Criminal District Attorney’s Office.

Stanek attended Texas Christian University were she received her Bachelors of Arts in political science and a minor in Spanish from Texas Christian University. She also attend Texas Tech University School of law and obtained a J.D. degree.
