Lubbock Ranks Within Top 20 Healthiest Counties in Texas
Texas has a total of 254 counties each sporting their own unique slice of lone star pride, but when it comes to healthy living and increased lifespans, which counties make the top of the list?
Texas' Healthiest Counties
According to Niche, Collin County leads the pack as the most healthiest in the Lone Star State. The county also boasts an obesity rate of 26.7% (from 2021 measurements). Less than 10% of the population are smokers, and Local Profile places the average lifespan of Collin County residents at 81.6 years.
Collin County also ranks number four in best counties to live in America, and number two in best counties for young professionals in Texas.
Niche places Travis County as the second healthiest in Texas. With an average life-expectancy of about 82 years of age, Travis County's population has a roughly 28.5% obesity rate.
Travis County, along with the number two ranking of healthiest in the state, holds the number five spot for best Texas counties for outdoor activities, and number six in the best counties for Texas families.
Texas' Least Healthiest Counties
Now, let's take a look at the bottom of the list, according to Niche.
Rounding out the bottom of the list is... drumroll, please... Kenedy County! This isn't really fair, since this county has a population of about 343, but it's on the list, regardless.
There really isn't much information on the health profiles of Kenedy residents, but in 2016, the average life expectancy for women was about 81.7 years, and for men? 73.1 years. Also, roughly 27.6% of Kenedy men were binge drinkers in 2016, and for men and women, the obesity rate was 38% and 42.6% respectively.
This is great and all, but where does Lubbock County sit?
Great question, Lubbock County was placed at number 18 in the list, right between Brazos and Hood Counties.
Get this, Lubbock County scored number 53 in counties with the best public schools in the country! Way to go! Unfortunately, the average lifespan is about one year less than the average American: 76.4 years.
The obesity rate also increased over 6% within the past decade, from 28.2% in 2014 to 34.6% in 2023. But hey, we still ranked number eight in best counties to live in Texas!
