A fight between a man and his stepson in Lubbock led to the son allegedly opening fire the morning of Saturday, April 23rd, 2022.

It happened a bit after 2 a.m. in the 1900 block of 74th Street. KAMC News reports that 49-year-old Tim Lara and 24-year-old Fabian Canales were arguing and, at some point, Canales "just lost it" and fired at his stepfather multiple times.

It's said that there was a physical altercation prior to the shooting and Lara had left the residence. Later, Lara returned to the residence and as he was walking towards Canales he was shot. Canales would later tell a witness that he never meant to shoot his stepfather. Police noted that at the exact time of the shooting, Lara was not attempting to punch Canales, didn't have anything in his hands and was around 10 feet away.

Officers with the Lubbock Police Department arrived at the scene and found Lara inside the residence with multiple gunshot wounds to his legs and torso. He was transported to University Medical Center by EMS where he later died.

Officers noted multiple spent shell casings on the ground in the living room and hallway as well as blood on the floor.

Canales apparently fled the scene before officers arrived, but he was eventually arrested for murder. He was booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $350,000 bond.
