Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins has called for a “racial justice” act.

Craig Watkins, who built a reputation as a prosecutor for freeing wrongfully convicted inmates before becoming the Dallas County DA, said he wants the state to consider the act.

If passed, a “racial justice” act would allow those convicted to appeal on the claim that their convictions or sentences were unfairly influenced by race.

Watkins claims that the act is an issue of fairness.

In a state like Texas, where frivolous lawsuits and tort reform are large issues, it is not likely that an idea like “racial justice” acts that would be so susceptible to abuse would gain much traction.

Currently only two states have “racial justice” acts.
