David Dewhurst received a nomination from a former political opponent Thursday afternoon. Craig James, the former ESPN broadcaster and now former senatorial candidate, gave his backing to Lt. Governor Dewhurst in a story first released by the Austin American Statesman. Dewhurst is in a runoff with Ted Cruz, former Solicitor General of Texas in a July 31st election.

“On July 31st, Texans will have a clear choice between David Dewhurst, a Texas conservative businessman, and Ted Cruz, a D.C. lawyer beholden to Washington insiders and politicians. David Dewhurst is a Texas patriot who will fight for our shared conservative values” said James.

“Washington insiders are spending millions in Texas trying to hand-pick the next senator,” James said. “That’s not the Texas way. We need an outsider who can take the Texas model to Washington and stand up to the political insiders who are trying to hand-pick our next U.S. senator. We need David Dewhurst.”

James finished in a distant fourth place with less than 4% of the vote behind Dewhurst, Cruz, and former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert. Does the endorsement of James help or hurt Dewhurst? Leave us your feedback here in our poll.
