On Monday's edition of Lubbock's First News, Congressman Randy Neugebauer joined Tom Collins and Laura Mac to discuss the latest going on in Washington.

In the next few weeks, the House will be presenting their version of the budget. Neugebauer compared the budget process to losing weight, in that you only see results when you start making changes. He remarked that America was fiscally "overweight," and the country needs to be put on a fiscal "diet."

"You don't lose weight by keep doing what you were doing. And the President keeps wanting to do what we've been doing. Unfortunately, America is overweight. It's spending more money than it brings in. And so, we're going to have to put our country on a "diet."

Speaking of diets, Neugebauer also brought up the food stamps program and other entitlement programs. He said that, while these programs are good for those who have no other alternative, there are far too many people on these programs and that the government cannot afford to continue supporting these people. Neugebauer said that these programs should be a temporary backstop, not a permanent handout, and that we need to start transitioning these people of of these programs.
