Walker Makes it Official

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker made it official yesterday, he is running for President. While Walker is just now making his race official, he is already considered a top-tier candidate and according to POLITICO is leading in Iowa.

Walker is currently polling second to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in the latest Real Clear Politics polling average, garnering 10.5 percent to Bush’s 16.3 percent — though he is leading the GOP field in Iowa, a state that is critical to his presidential hopes.

Following Monday’s announcement in Waukesha, Walker will embark on a tour of early primary states, heading to Nevada on Tuesday, South Carolina on Wednesday and New Hampshire on Thursday. He will then travel through Iowa in a Winnebago, starting Friday in Davenport.

The governor is considered the frontrunner in the Hawkeye State, leading Bush 18 percent to 12 percent, according to the latest survey conducted by We Ask America. More than 80 percent of Republican insiders in Iowa told POLITICO last week that Walker would win the caucuses if they were held now.

As of last week, Walker was said to have raised nearly $30 million for his presidential bid, putting him behind Bush, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in the Republican primary money race.

Walker is being cast as the "every man" politician who can appeal the average Republican voter. Walker will position himself as someone who is more conservative than Jeb Bush and more electable than a Ted Cruz. Walker will also tout his wins against Democrats. To separate himself from Rick Perry, Walker will point to Perry being a successful Governor of a state that is dominated by Republicans. Walker has been successful in a liberal state that is much more hostile to Republicans than Texas and even Jeb Bush's Florida.

I am looking forward to the Bush vs Walker themes that will eventually emerge.

Cruz Targets Sanctuary Cities

Ted Cruz will use the Senate to his advantage as he targets sanctuary cities according to the Dallas Morning News.

Cruz, along with conservative Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., filed an amendment to the Every Child Achieves Act that would redirect federal funding from more than 200 sanctuary cities to state governments, according to The Hill. The bill is bipartisan rewrite of the George W. Bush-era No Child Left Behind Act with support from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and the immigration amendment could ruin Democratic support for the bill

“It doesn’t make any sense for our cities to be harboring violent criminals,” Cruz told Fox News on Thursday, “and it doesn’t make sense for the federal government to be releasing violent criminals.”

Republicans are speaking out against sanctuary cities after 32-year-old Kathryn Steinle was allegedly shot and killed in San Francisco by an undocumented immigrant who had already been deported five times.

Cruz, Sen. John Cornyn  joined a letter from six other GOP senators to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson. They question federal immigration enforcement priorities how they are applied.

Republicans need to ban sanctuary cities in the United States. It's been an issue for far too long.
