Galveston’s Park Board approved a $58 million upgrade package for Moody Gardens Tuesday.

The project will be paid for by the Moody Foundation. The foundation funds and operates the city-owned attraction.

The renovation will remove aging motion-based rides.

A Stingray touch tank and a Humboldt Penguin exhibit will be added.

New displays utilizing Nickelodeon cartoon characters like SpongeBob Squarepants will also be added to teach kids about the environment and conservation.

The Palm Beach Water Park will receive a ropes course and zip line as part of the renovation package.

All upgrades are expected to be completed by the 2018 season.
