Lubbock is always under road construction, so being good drivers and obeying work zone laws can keep you outside of the hundreds of Texans who die in car accidents at road work sites each year.

Push the Brakes, It's the Law

With more than 1,800 active work zones across the state, the Texas Department of Transportation is raising awareness of fatal accidents when road workers are present.

Let's look at the data. There were over 28,000 car accidents in designated work zones across Texas in 2025. 203 people were killed, as a result, including seven roadside workers.

Most fatalities consisted of drivers and passengers failing to pay attention to the construction and warning signs.

Because of this, TxDOT has provided tips on how to avoid being a statistic on the roadway.

How to be Safe Drivers in Texas

In Texas, there are five practices that drivers can follow when approaching work zones:

  1. Slow down and follow the adjusted speed limit
  2. Stay off your phone and focus on the road, orange cones, and workers present
  3. Follow road crew instructions
  4. Give yourself plenty of room behind the car in front of you to brake in emergencies
  5. Plan ahead to accommodate for construction delays
