Around two dozen employees were evacuated from Covenant Medical Center this morning after a fire alarm was triggered. The Code Red was triggered in a small data center in the basement by a chemical compound called halon. Halon is a non-hazardous substance used to keep oxygen from reacting and fueling a fire. It appears the chemical was discharged in the data center, setting off alarms, although investigators are still trying to determine what caused the discharge.

The Lubbock Fire Department along with various Covenant emergency crews responded. Five Covenant employees were exposed to the halon, but were not affected. Hazmat crews were not called out because the chemical is non-toxic.  Covenant expects to know more about the incident this afternoon.
