On Monday's edition of Lubbock's First News, Dr. Hal Carlson and Dr. Jerry Perez from the Texas Tech chess program and the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship talked with Tom Collins and Laura about how Tech's chess team is fairing in the tournament.

Today is the final day of the tournament, which started on Friday, December 27th at the Overton Hotel. Dr. Carlson said that currently, Texas Tech is in 3rd place overall, followed closely by University of Texas at Brownsville and University of Maryland at Baltimore. Tech will be taking on the top-ranked Webster University in the final round today.

Dr. Perez noted that the current Webster coach, Susan Polger, was the former Texas Tech chess coach. He added that the team Texas Tech will face today is also made up of former Tech students who transferred to Webster with Coach Polger, so in a sense, Tech will be taking on their own team today. The tournament will resume today at 9:00 AM and the public is welcome to attend.
