DeLorean Motor Company last weekend in Houston unveiled a prototype for a new electric version of the iconic DeLorean made famous by the 1980's "Back to the Future" movies.

DeLorean today unveiled photos of the new prototype on Facebook.

The majority of the vehicle's battery packs and electric engine will be located in the trunk of the car.  That is the same place the engine in the original DeLoreans were housed.

According to specifications released by DeLorean, the new DMCEV (DeLorean Motor Company Electric Vehicle) will have a 400 volt AC induction liquid-cooled electric motor capable of 260 horsepower.

The top speed is 125mph with 0-60mph time at 4.9 seconds.

The battery will capable of 100+ miles of city driving on a single charge.  DeLorean states the battery system for the car is a proprietary technology called "Flux Power LifePO4 battery with advanced control systems".  The amount of time needed to fully charge the battery from empty to full will be 3 and-a-half hours.

The interior of the DMCEV appears to be very modern.  There is a built in spot in the center console for an iPod or iPhone to be tied into the car's stereo system along with a navigation system.  The seats are leather too.

Just like in the original DeLorean the car only seats two and it also features gull-wing doors.

The outlet for charging the batter is ingeniously located behind the familiar DMC grill.

Technology website Jalopnik last weekend had the opportunity to participate in a test-drive of the DMCEV prototype in an oval track in the Houston-area.

The DMCEV is expected to be in mass production in 2013.
