Prior to becoming interim provost, Dr. Lawrence Schovanec served for nearly a year as interim Texas Tech president and two years as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Williams, also a professor of anthropology, serves as the associate dean of finance for the college.
The 10-member committee is chaired by Jerry E. Turner, chairman of the Board of Regents and a 1968 graduate of Texas Tech.
Schovanec will serve until a search committee selects a replacement for Guy Bailey, who accepted a position as president of the University of Alabama.
