The City of Lubbock will host a dedication event on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at 8 p.m. for the new T.J. Patterson Memorial Plaza. The event and plaza are located just outside of Citizen's Tower in Downtown Lubbock.

All citizens are invited to the the event which will honor the life and memory of the former Lubbock City Councilman and community activist. There will be a musical performance, sign lightings ceremony, and refreshments.

Patterson was born in Waxahachie, Texas grew up in Wichita Falls and moved to Lubbock after graduating from Bishop College in Marshall. Patterson was the first African-American to serve on the Lubbock City Council. Patterson served on the Lubbock City Council for 20 years after being first elected in 1984. Councilwoman Shelia Patterson Harris, one of his daughters now represents District 2 on the Lubbock City Council.

T.J. Patterson died on September 21, 2022.
