On the Thursday edition of The Chad Hasty Show, current LISD Board of Trustees President Steve Massengale talked with Chad Hasty about his campaign for the Texas House of Representatives.

Massengale, the current president of the LISD Board of Trustees, announced his campaign for Texas House of Representative District 83 on Tuesday, challenging the incumbent Representative Charles Perry. He said that although both he and Representative Perry are running as conservatives, Massengale differs from Perry in that he is much more passionate about education and public schools.

Massegnale also pointed out that Representative Perry, cut about $5 billion from public school, which resulted in a $14 million cut for LISD. He added that the school funding system was "broken," and the solution to fixing school funding was not necessarily adding more money, but ensuring proper distribution and equity.

When asked about school vouchers, Massengale said he was not in favor of them. He also shared some concerns he had with charter schools and the possible profiteering and lack of regulation going on within them. Massengale also stated that he was not in favor of campus carry.

"I have my concerns about charter school. I feel like, as a state and country, that we've invested in public education, and I think that's something we need to continue to invest in. It's still the vehicle that educates most of our kids. What I hate to see is that we divert some of these monies from the state to fund some of these [charter schools]."
