Former classmates are grieving this morning after learning that a 19-year-old former Lubbock Southcrest Christian School student has been shot and killed by a Liberty University campus police officer in Lynchburg, VA.

Police say Joshua Hathaway, a freshman at Liberty University, attacked a campus officer with a hammer about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning in the lobby of a women’s dormitory after making a false report, according to a police warrant.

Police say Hathaway told the officer he was robbed and his car had been stolen.

As the officer spoke with Hathaway, the freshman allegedly pulled a hammer from his clothing and attacked the officer, and the officer defended himself by shooting Hathaway.

Hathaway was attending Liberty University on a full scholarship, and had played basketball Lubbock’s Southcrest Christian School.

The university police officer is recovering at a Lynchburg hospital.
