Two groups at Texas Tech will help those serving around the world in our military get in touch with their loved ones back home.

The Texas Tech Military and Veterans Program and Student Union and Activities are sponsoring the Cell Phones for Soldiers drive next week on the University campus.

Students, faculty, and staff are asked to donate their old cell phones from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. all next week outside of the Student Union Building.

Proceeds from 50,000 old cell phones the organization hope to collect this year will be used to purchase calling cards to help troops connect with their loved ones at home.

Monty Trimble, president of the Texas Tech Veterans Association said he remembers one instance where he placed a 7-minute call for $65.

“Just being able to call home and talk to someone that you have not seen in a while is enough to lift your spirits for a week or more,” Trimble said.

Trimble was deployed four times, and spent eight years overseas.

The program will kick off this Sunday at the women’s soccer game at John Walker Soccer Complex beginning at 12:30 p.m.
