Over the weekend, a Grand Junction man was arrested for pointing a banana at the cops. We can't make this stuff up!

Mesa County Sheriff's deputies arrested 27-year-old Nathen Channing, of Fruitvale, on Sunday night for pointing a banana at two Mesa County Sheriff's deputies, who believed it was a gun.

Nathen Channing was walking down 29 Road, just north of D Road when Mesa County Sheriff's deputies Joshua Bunch and Donald Love passed by him.

According to KDVR, Bunch said Channing reached into his coat and pulled out a yellow object, pointing it in the air and then in the direction of Bunch.

Fearing what Channing was holding was a weapon, Bunch sped off and radioed Love who was following behind him. As Bunch returned to the area, he said he witnessed Channing point the object at Love.

Loved got out of his vehicle and approached Channing, saying, "I observed what appeared to be a yellow tube, with a black center." Love stated he was in fear of his life and reached for his weapon.

At this point, Channing shouted out, "It's a banana!"

Bunch explained his misinterpretation of the object, stating:

"Based on training and experience, I have seen handguns in many shapes and colors and perceived this to be a handgun.”

After confirming that the object was harmless, the deputies approached Channing asking him to explain his actions, Channing stated:

"He does a lot of ‘YouTube’ and thought it would be a ‘funny joke.'"

Nathen said he did it to a friend who was also driving in the area and his friend thought it was funny.

Bunch noticed there were no cameras in the area and asked Channing if he was going to post it to YouTube, but Channing said it was jus a "trial run" of the joke. Nathen also stated he thought it would "lighten the holiday spirit."

Even after apologizing for the incident, Channing was arrested and charged with two counts of felony menacing where he could receive three years in prison and a fine between $1,000 and $100,000.

We know this is a serious incident that could have ended in a very bad way, but we couldn't find any yellow gun that remotely resembled a banana. There were a couple toy guns that were completely yellow, but that's about it.

What do you think? Cops overreacting or did Channing just do something stupid?
