Longtime Lt. Gov. Dewhurst political adviser has been accused of stealing campaign funds.

According to the Dallas Morning News Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst’s state campaign committee has blamed Kenneth Barfield for “misappropriation of committee funds” in their amended finance reports.

Barfield is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars that caused the committee’s cash on hand to decrease from $777,000 to $7,000 in the amended documents.

Rob Johnson, the committee’s spokesman, has said that authorities have been contacted and Dewhurst expressed his shock by stating that “a former senior trusted adviser would steal from the campaign account for his own personal gain.”

Barfield failed in a run for the U.S. Senate this year and ran the Dewhurst re-election campaign in 2010.
