Banning Guns Isn't the Answer

On Thursday we all watched coverage of another mass shooting, this time at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Details of that shooting are still coming out and it will take time to figure out why the shooter carried out the evil act.

As the hours went by on Thursday, disturbing details were released about the shooter and what he said to his victims. According to CNN, the shooter target Christians by asking them to stand up before he murdered them.

Before going into spinal surgery, Anastasia Boylan told her father and brother the gunman entered her classroom firing. The professor in the classroom was shot point blank. Others were hit, she told her family.

Everyone in the classroom dropped to the ground.

The gunman, while reloading his handgun, ordered the students to stand up if they were Christians, Boylan told her family.

"And they would stand up and he said, 'Good, because you're a Christian, you're going to see God in just about one second,'" Boylan's father, Stacy, told CNN, relaying her account.

"And then he shot and killed them."

Pure evil.

President Obama and other liberals immediately blamed the gun and access to guns as the problem in America. It was a predictable and sad response. The President said in a press conference, before many details were released, that we need more laws and more restrictions. Yet not one law that has been proposed by the President or the left would have prevented any of the previous shootings. What we must address instead is mental illness and admit that there is evil in our world. Those who want to commit evil acts will commit those acts whether or not guns are around or not.

Something else that should be addressed is that the shooting on Thursday happened in a gun-free zone. What if students and professors had been allowed to protect themselves? Would there have been as many killed? No one can answer that for sure but chances are something could have been done sooner.

The campus did have a security guard, but the guard was unarmed. I heard many interviews with those who were on the campus who said that they never thought gun violence would happen at their school.

Liberals must understand that blaming guns and gun owners is not the answer. Instead we must all recognize that evil exists in the world and we should all be allowed to protect ourselves from that evil. Instead, the left would rather demonize guns and gun owners while ignoring facts and reality.
