Will Cruises Out Of Texas and Other Ports Be Impacted By Dockworkers’ Strike?
You've probably heard by now about the on-going strike by the International Longshoreman's Association. Dockworkers from Boston to Texas have gone on strike causing fear among many that the supply chain could be impacted depending on how long the strike lasts. Dockworkers on the west coast are represented by a different union and are not on strike.
But what will happen with cruise ship ports? Will people leaving for a cruise vacation out of Texas, Louisiana, Florida, etc. be affected by the strike?
Will Cruises Be Affected By The Longshoreman's Strike?
According to chron.com, Galveston is the fourth-largest passenger cruise terminal in the nation. A lot of people travel to Galveston every week to board a cruise. When cruises were shutdown during the pandemic, it had a big impact on the local economy in Galveston.
Fortunately, the on-going strike will not have any impact on those taking a vacation on a cruise.
According to chron.com, the ILA President in a press release last week wrote that the ILA did not want families to be "disappointed" or "inconvenienced" and that during the pandemic their members lost a lot of manhours. The port director also confirmed that there would be no interruption to the cruise port in Galveston.
While there will be no impact for those boarding a cruise ship, if the strike continues for weeks, those aboard a ship may feel an impact due to supply chain issues. It has been reported that shipments of fruits and vegetables including bananas and cherries could be impacted. Even shipments of coffee could be delayed.
