United Supermarkets is asking the Lubbock City Council to nominate them to be designated as an enterprise project within Texas.

The designation comes from the Office of the Governor Economic Development and Tourism and nominations can only be made by municipalities. If United is nominated and is designated, tax rebates would be available to them under the Texas Enterprise Zone Act.

A number of criterions must be met for nomination, including:

  • A high level of cooperation between public, private and neighborhood entities.
  • The enterprise designation will help with city plans for development and revitalization.
  • Within the best interest of the city to nominate them.

It is interesting to note the advancement of revitalization and development plans because Lubbock has a push to revitalize downtown, where United Supermarkets does not have any locations.

The council will consider the resolution at their regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, November 18.
