On Thursday, April 1st, University Medical Center Children's Hospital is hosting the Pinwheels for Prevention Ceremony.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and back in 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America made the pinwheel the symbol for child abuse prevention across the nation.

The Ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. in the UMC courtyard. To reach the courtyard, enter through the main entrance and walk straight back. UMC Children's Hospital providers and staff will be placing pinwheels in the courtyard to raise awareness. Multiple speakers will be also present at the ceremony to educate and provide insight to child abuse here in Lubbock.

In a release by the UMC Health System, they said that an average of 3 children a day in Lubbock County become victims of abuse and neglect. The release goes on to say:

National Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families. During the month of April, and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities and promote prevention across the country. Join UMC and many local partners as we work together through the GO BLUE LUBBOCK campaign to coordinate efforts.
