For some, the joy of the holiday season is overshadowed by grief over a loved one killed on Texas roads. Because of this, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has issued a warning to all motorists to never take risks when drinking alcohol and attempting to drive.

Holiday Drunk Driving is a Killer

I know I sound like every other PSA out there, but it's true: driving while drunk or tipsy is never worth the risk. We hear on the news all the time of someone who knocked back a few too many and decided to drive home from the bar, only to lose their life or take another's.

According to TxDOT, December 2024 had the highest cases of drunk driving in all of last year with over 2,000 crashes during the holiday season alone.

The purpose of these messages is not to deter you from enjoying an alcoholic beverage with family, it's to remind you to plan ahead in order to avoid life-long tragedies afterwards.

Create a Game Plan Before Drinking

If you choose to drink alcohol this holiday season, make sure you follow one of these four options:

  • Assign a designated driver in the friend group who won't drink
  • Call a sober friend when you are ready to go home
  • Use public transportation like the city bus or an Uber rather than taking your own car
  • Stay at the venue and drink plenty of water until you sober up and are safe to drive
