The Lubbock Animal Shelter Is Reopening
Lubbock Animal Services will begin adoptions and taking in animals after shutting down recently after an outbreak of distemper at the shelter.
The shelter has been closed and adoptions have stopped since a July 31st announcement about an illness that had killed some animals. After testing, it was determined that distemper was the source of the outbreak.
According to KAMC, in order to protect the public and the animals, Lubbock Animal Services will be taking extra precautions.
To keep all animals safe, LAS said they will take extra precaution to prevent any possible contamination. The shelter asked visitors to wear protective shoe covers in all animal rooms and change them in between visiting rooms.
There will be only one dog allowed in the play yards at a time and no physical interactions between puppies. LAS said visitors can not interact with dogs from different rooms, but can interact with multiple dogs from the same room.
In addition to the precautions at the shelter, field operations will be for emergencies only.
