It's official: there is a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in San Angelo.

Earlier today, March 24th, health officials confirmed that a 70-year-old man who had recently been traveling has officially been diagnosed.

Health officials confirmed this, and the local health authority, Dr. James Vretis, said this in order to help prevent the spread:

“We have been preparing for several weeks for the arrival. I ask members of our community to remember that it is the simple things done correctly that will save lives. Wash your hands, cover your cough and stay away from sick people. Don’t go to work if you’re sick. The simple things you were taught as a child will help us through this disease.”

It has not been revealed where the man traveled to.

According to GoSanAngelo.com, officials in both the city and county say there are many steps you can take to prevent yourself from catching the virus:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home as much as possible, but especially if you are feeling sick.
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or use a tissue to cover it, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Now the last thing we want to do is panic. If you find yourself experiencing symptoms, do not go to the doctor. Call them first. This will help prevent the spread of unnecessary germs.

We will keep you up to date as more info becomes available.
