Thanks to joint efforts from multiple agencies, a suspected July 4th terroristic attack was thwarted in the Texas panhandle.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) recently announced that they have successfully apprehended a young man from Canyon, TX, who they believe had plans to commit a mass casualty attack.

Rising Suspicions Towards Kevin Hunt

On July 2, 18-year-old Kevin Hunt was detained after appearing on the radar of Texas DPS when his social media activity became more and more concerning. In the weeks leading up to his detainment, he expressed a desire for self harm and to commit a mass casualty attack, according to a news release from Texas DPS.

On top of the alarming social media activity, Hunt also demonstrated ideations online that caused local law enforcement to grow suspicious of a potential for a targeted attack.

After collaborating with the Randall County District Attorney's Office, DPS obtained a search warrant for Hunt's residence. It was here where officers seized various materials used in creating home-made explosive devices, along with some firearms and "several hundred rounds of ammunition," the release states.

DPS Northwest Texas Region Chief Joe Longway expressed his joy in stopping whatever dangerous plans Hunt was preparing for.

Because of the strong partnerships DPS has with other law enforcement agencies at the local and federal level, the horrific plans we believe this individual had planned, never materialized.
