Jones AT&T Stadium is currently around 30 to 40 percent full as the second half kickoff sails out of the end zone.  Sam Houston State gets the ball at their own 25, down 42-31. According to 1340 The Fan's Ashley Wirz, the heat is almost unbearable down on field level.  It looks like may fans have had enough of the heat.

J.J. Gaines pick-6, 47 yard interception return for a touchdown. During Countdown to Kickoff, we discussed the fact that Texas Tech needed to assert itself on defense with a score.  Texas Tech leads 49-31 with 14:14 left in the third quarter.

And the scoring doesn't stop, Mahomes finds Lauderdale open on a go route in the end zone for a 29 yard touchdown pass. Texas Tech leads Sam Houston State 42-31 with 0:14 left in the half.  The game has now reached the two hour mark. We're wondering if some defense will be found at halftime.

A 53 yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Sadler, extends Texas Tech's lead to 35-24.  Sam Houston State is running the Two Minute Drill, getting a 3rd and 8 at the Texas Tech 29 with 1:05 left in the half.  It looks like the heat is starting to affect the players as we are nearing two hours of playing time for the first half.  The Bearkats expose a hole in the middle of the secondary with a 29 yard touchdown pass to Davion Davis.  Texas Tech now leads 35-31 with 0:52 left in the second quarter.

Texas Tech uses a timeout on defense after giving up a 28 yard pass on a flea flicker by the Bearkats. After the timeout, Sam Houston State has a 1st & 10 at the Texas Tech 21 yard line. A pass to LaDarius Brown gets the Bearkats to the two yard line.  Texas Tech's secondary is still have problems keeping up with some of the Bearkats receivers.

After giving up a 47 yard rush to allow Sam Houston inside their 35 yard line, the Texas Tech defense buckled down to force a 48 yard field goal attempt. Luc Swimberghe's kick was good, cutting down the Texas Tech lead to 21-17 with 7:30 left in the 2nd quarter.  Then, Jakeem Grant returned the kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, extending Texas Tech's lead to 28-17 with 7:13 left in the second.  Grant's speed can cause problems for defenses and the Bearkats experienced that as he ran from right to left across the field for the return.

Nothing doing on the Red Raiders drive, as the Bearkats force a three-and-out. Sam Houston starts their ensuing drive at their own 22 after a 61 yard punt by Taylor Symmank.

And the Tech defense responds, forcing a Sam Houston state punt, to get the ball back with 11:49 left in the second quarter.  Texas Tech's lead remains 21-14. Mahomes will have a long way to go for his next touchdown, a block in the back will start the Tech drive a their own 8 yard line.

Shades of Tony Romo, or Johnny Football, Patrick Mahomes uses his feet to evade three separate defenders in the backfield before firing in an 8 yard touchdown pass to Ian Sadler. Texas Tech goes up 21-14 with 13:24 left in the second quarter. The big test on the next possession will be if the Texas Tech defense can stop the Sam Houston offense.

Mahomes shows his big play ability, hitting Devin Lauderdale in stride on a 64 yard touchdown pass.  Texas Tech now leads 14-7 with 3:54 left in the first quarter.

Lauderdale only had about two steps of separation from the defensive back, but the pass was placed perfectly for the reception.

Texas Tech defense looks more comfortable against the Bearkats, forcing multiple incomplete passes and a three-and-out.

Mahomes lines up in a five wide receiver, shotgun set and ends up taking a delay of game penalty to set up a Texas Tech punt from the Bearkat 43 yard line.  The Texas Tech punt goes through the end zone for a touchback. Even though it would have been a big gamble on a 4th and 9, I would have liked to see the Red Raiders run a play.

Next drive out, Mahomes is passing more often for Tech. A short pass to DeAndre Washington sets up a 3rd & 9 at the Bearkat 38 yard line.  Mahomes almost gets picked off by inside linebacker A.J. Davis hanging out in the middle of the field.  That sets up a 4th & 9 with 5:49 left in the first quarter.  Sam Houston State elects to use a timeout to figure out their 4th Down defensive play.
