Humble ISD Superintendent Dr. Roger Brown is in hot water after making highly controversial, racially-motivated remarks towards the Houston Mayor.

Texas Superintendent Under Fire

Dr. Roger Brown was just recently appointed as Humble ISD Superintendent on Jan. 8th. In a recent meeting with school district employees about the widespread power outages, Dr. Brown expressed his anger towards the Houston Mayor Whitmire and the energy company CenterPoint.

During his speech, he allegedly stated he would like to "lynch the mayor" and "take him out back and hang him on a tree" after being without power for several days at that point.

Dr. Brown's remarks sparked enough backlash that he apologized for his comments during the following school board meeting. He claimed that he was referencing the television show "The Settlers," which portrays a family who lives their lives without electricity, as an example to show how well off people are when they have power in their homes.

I never, never meant for this exaggerated comment to be taken literally. No one, including myself, was actually wanting to harm CenterPoint or Mayor Whitmire or Mayor Funderburk.

Norman Funderburk serves as the Mayor of Humble, TX.

Humble, TX, Response to Dr. Brown

There were quite a few people who expressed their anger towards Dr. Brown using the word "lynch" when venting about the Houston Mayor. Others were more receptive to Dr. Brown's apology and saying he owned up to it, such as Trustee Marques Holmes who had this to say:

I can say, as a black man, I know what racism looks like. Are his comments absolutely insensitive? Absolutely. Do we all have some things that we need to work on? Yep, do we all make gaffes? Yep.

It's unclear at this time if Dr. Brown will remain as Superintendent at Humble ISD or not as the dust settles.
