Spring is finally here and schools are gearing up for Summer vacation in a few months but one local school will be closing their doors all of next school year. Levelland ISD has announced that their Intermediate School will not be reopening for the upcoming Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 school year.

KAMC news reports that Superintendent Becky McCutchen states that the Levelland Intermediate Schools enrollment has declined by more than 400 students since 2016. For some bigger schools, such as Lubbock High and Monterrey High, this number is not that big but for rural area schools it can cause a very noticeable issue.

Along with the decline in enrollment the school is in need of some upgrades to the facility such as new plumbing, wiring, and roofing among other things. Those repairs alone will cost the district $2 million which forced the district to make the serious decision in terms of the future of the school.

According to a press release the configuration of the schools will change with Pre-K through 1st grade together. South Elementary and Capital Elementary will hold 2nd grade through 4th grade classes. Lastly grades 5th through 8th will be in the Levelland Middle School with the High School not having any changes.

The district does state that the teachers from the Intermediate School will not be left behind or let go. Those teachers will be found jobs in other schools with help from the district, they are set to meet with their respective principles to figure out a solution.
