Recently, a batch of monkeys escaped from a research lab in South Carolina, and a primate sanctuary in south Texas has urged that the jailbreaking monkeys be sent their way for a permanent home.

Up to Some Monkey Business

A total of 43 monkeys escaped the South Carolina lab, but not all of them have been recovered. Apparently, the escaped monkeys, all female, are too small (6 to 7 pounds each) and young to carry any diseases that could harm other animals or humans.

The escape was reportedly the direct result from human error, as a caretaker failed to securely lock the door as they left, allowing the primates to make their great escape.

The focus isn't quite directed toward the remaining primates, but rather towards the group as a whole.

Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary in south Texas contacted the research lab owned by Alpha Genesis Inc. to permanently rehome all 43 monkeys.

They reached out via Facebook to gather support in their ventures:

On top of this, the sanctuary has opened a petition where supporters can sign their name and aid in the fight. At the time that this article was written, the petition already had over 1,000 signatures urging Genesis Alpha to work with Born Free USA.

According to the Born Free USA website, the 175-acre property comfortably houses hundreds of monkeys that were rescued from roadside zoos, abusive homes or that have served as animal experiments.
