A man authorities believe is responsible for the death of his former girlfriend had to be rescued and taken to a hospital after he jumped over the edge of Grand Canyon yesterday.

48-year-old Terrance Deering Black is the prime suspect in the abduction and death of 40-year-old Susan Loper. Loper went missing Tuesday morning from the Plano Country Club where she worked as a fitness instructor. There were signs of a struggle at her workplace and her purse was left behind. Her body was found Wednesday in Frisco where the two lived.

Early Friday police had issued a capitol murder warrant for Black, with a bond amount of $1 million. Meanwhile in Arizona, park rangers at the Grand Canyon received reports that a panhandler was in the park. When the approached him, he jumped over the side, falling 25 feet. As rescue efforts were in progress the rangers were notified that Black was suspected to be in the area. Rangers identified him and he was airlifted to an Arizona medical center for treatment.

Once Black is released from the hospital he’ll be detained in the Coconino County Detention center until Texas Rangers can pick him up.
