
Red Raiders Suffer Heartbreaking Run-Rule Loss To BYU in Big 12 Opener
In the long-awaited Big 12 Championship opener, the Texas Tech Red Raiders lost to the BYU Cougars, 8-18, ending their baseball season at 27-28 overall.
Red Raiders Lose to BYU
Despite the loss, No. 12 seed Texas Tech had a phenomenal start against BYU on Tuesday evening. The teams were scoreless until the bottom of the second when the Cougars put the first run of the game on the board. The Red Raiders made an explosive start of their own, putting up five runs in the top of the third inning.
This was also when junior Logan Hughes hit a 460-foot two-run homer, further adding to their lead over BYU. This was Hughes' 37th home run while playing for Texas Tech, putting him in ninth place in the program's history for most home runs.
Things started to take a turn after a scoreless 4th inning from Texas Tech, allowing BYU's three runs to put them in the lead. By the top of the 5th, it was 7-5, Cougars.
The Big 12 Championship opener only lasted seven innings because, at the bottom of the 6th, BYU put up a whopping seven runs against Texas Tech's two.
An extra three runs from the Cougars in the bottom of the 7th closed out the game with a run rule. The final score between Texas Tech and BYU was 8-18 in favor of the Cougars.
Moving Ahead Without Texas Tech
After dropping the Big 12 Tournament opener, Texas Tech officially ends their season at 27-28 overall.
