Thunderstorms are some of the greatest displays of nature, and with all that power comes great risk.

It's generally agreed that standing outside during a massive thunderstorm is not the best idea, but let's go over why that's true when it comes to lightning strike fatalities in Texas and throughout America.

Lightning Fatalities in Texas

According to the National Lightning Safety Council, there have been 41 deaths between 2006 and 2024 due to lightning strikes.

2007 saw the most deaths out of all the years at six. The youngest was a 25-year-old man working on his boat in Port Arthur. The oldest? A 64-year-old oil storage worker cleaning a pump.

Between 2006 and 2024, the heartbreaking truth is that the youngest victim was just six years old from Valley Mills. The little boy was just walking home from the bus stop when his life was tragically ended by a lightning strike.

What Are the Odds of Getting Struck by Lightning?

It's a common saying when comparing the low odds of something happening: "You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning." How true is this, though?

In fact, according to the lightning safety council, the odds of getting struck are highly dependent on where you live in the country.

For instance, Florida saw at least 50 deaths due to lightning strikes within the past decade alone. This is a huge difference when compared to landlocked states like North Dakota (one death in past 10 years) and Minnesota (zero deaths).

Taking the estimated U.S. population in 2025 which is about 342,000,000, the odds of getting struck by lightning in any given year are about 1/1,710,000.

This looks a little scarier when you think about the fact that the odds of getting struck at least once in your lifetime are drastically higher at 1/21,400.

Wherever you may live and whatever you may be doing outside, it's always important to heed thunderstorm warnings. If your city meteorologist tells you to move indoors when lightning roars, I recommend doing so.
