Texas Controversy: Flags at Full-Staff on Inauguration Day
Gov. Abbott is making what some may call a bold move by breaking tradition and ignoring President Biden's proclamation. Biden ordered that all American flags be flown at half-mast in commemoration of former President Jimmy Carter's death, but Abbott will fly them high and proud on inauguration day here in Texas.
Gov. Abbott Says 'No'
On December 29, former President Jimmy Carter passed away. President Biden then ordered all American flags be flown at half-staff for the following 30 days. Well, Inauguration Day happens to be January 20... well within the 30-day period.
In the recent release from Abbott's office, he informs the public that "as we unite our country and usher in this new era of leadership, I ordered all flags to be raised to full-staff at the Texas Capitol and all state buildings for the inauguration of President Trump."
Abbott continued by saying that "while we honor the service of a former President, we must also celebrate the service of an incoming President and the bright future ahead for the United States of America."
The Texas Governor also cited federal statute that describes the time and occasions for displaying the American flag. According to the document, the flag should especially be displayed on the following notable days:
- New Year's
- Inauguration Day
- MLK Jr.'s birthday
- Easter Sunday
- July 4
- Veterans Day
- Thanksgiving
- And many more
So far, Texas is the only state that will be flying flags at full-mast on Jan. 20, but other governors will end the period of half-mast on Jan. 28, 29, and even 31.
So, what do you think? Do you support Abbott's decision about the flag on inauguration day?
